Procedure

To a stirred solution of 3-fluoro-4-phenoxybenzenamine (2.6 g, 12.79 mmol, 1.00 equiv) in ethylene glycol dimethyl ether (35 mL) at room temperature was added a solution of 50% sulfuric acid (5 mL) in water (25 mL) dropwise. The reaction was cooled to −5° C. and a solution of sodium nitrite (1.33 g, 19.28 mmol, 1.51 equiv) in water (9 mL) was then added dropwise within 20 min. The resulting solution was stirred for 30 min at −5-0° C. A solution of sodium iodide (9.6 g, 64.00 mmol, 5.00 equiv) in water (25 mL) was added dropwise into the reaction mixture at −5° C. The resulting solution was stirred at −5-0° C. for 30 min then extracted with 3×100 mL of ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers was washed with 3×200 mL of saturated sodium sulfite solution, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under vacuum to give 3.88 g (97%) of 2-fluoro-4-iodo-1-phenoxybenzene as a yellow oil. 1H-NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ 7.53-7.49 (m, 1H), 7.42-7.30 (m, 2H), 7.13-7.08 (m, 1H), 6.99-6.96 (m, 2H), 6.78 (t, J=8.4 Hz, 2H) ppm.
