Procedure

To a round bottom flask was added (2R,5R)-2,5-bis(4-methoxybenzyl)hexanedioic acid (10 mg, 0.026 mmol) and 30% HBr in acetic acid (0.5 mL). The reaction was stirred at 120° C. for 2 days. The solvent was removed and the residue was purified by RP prep-HPLC. The fraction was concentrated to give (2R,5R)-2,5-bis(4-hydroxybenzyl)hexanedioic acid (3.0 mg, 8.4 μmol, 32% yield) as an off-white solid. Anal. Calcd. for C20H22O6 m/z 358.3. found: 357.3 (M−H)+.
