To a round bottom flask was added (S)-tert-butyl 2-oxo-1-phenylpiperidin-3-ylcarbamate (100 mg, 0.344 mmol) and 4 N HCl in dioxane (2.2 mL). The reaction was stirred at rt for 3 hr. The solvent was removed to give (S)-3-amino-1-phenylpiperidin-2-one (70 mg, 0.31 mmol, 90% yield) as an HCl salt. Anal. Calcd. for C11H14N2O m/z 190.2. found: 191.2 (M+H)+.
