To a stirred solution of 7-hydroxyquinoline (59.0 g, 0.406 mol) in AcOH (120 mL) and CH2Cl2 (240 mL) was slowly added bromine (22.9 mL, 0.444 mol) in AcOH (120 mL) while maintaining the internal temperature at 0-5° C. The resulting suspension was stirred for 2 h at 0-5° C., and then diluted with EtOAc (100 mL) and filtered. The solid was washed with EtOAc (2×20 mL) and dried in vacuo to give 8-bromo-7-hydroxyquinoline (65 g, 76%).
