trans-Cinnamic acid (5 g, 33.7 mmol, Aldrich) was dissolved in toluene (100 mL), and the solution was cooled to 0° C. and flushed with N2. Anhydrous DMF (0.1 mL) was added, followed by oxalyl chloride (8.56 g, 5.88 mL, 67.4 mmol) dropwise over 8 minutes. The mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 1 hour and at room temperature for 1.5 hours. The solvent was removed under vacuum to give the title compound (7.63 g).
