Procedure

A solution of N-phenylglycine (1.51 g, 0.01 mol) and N,N′-carbonyldiimidazole (1.62 g, 0.01 mol) in THF (25 mL) was heated at 50° C. for 30 min under Ar. A solution of 55 (2.08 g, 0.01 mol) in THF (50 mL) was then added over 30 min, and the resulting mixture was heated at 70° C. overnight. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo, and the residue was dissolved in EtOAc (100 mL) and washed with saturated NaHCO3 (2×100 mL) and brine (100 mL). The organic phase was filtered through phase separation filter paper and concentrated in vacuo to give 3.0 g of a red oil which was used in the next step without further purification.
