A mixture of 2-{[(1E)-1-(1,1-dioxido-2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzothiazepin-4(5H)-yl)ethylidene]amino}-5-methylbenzonitrile (1.5 g, 4.24 mmol), zinc chloride (578 mg, 4.24 mmol) and N,N-dimethylacetamide (4 mL) was heated with stirring at 160° C. for 3 hours under argon. After the reaction mixture was cooled to about 40° C., an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (2 N, 20 mL) was introduced. After being stirred for 10 minutes at room temperature, the reaction mixture was poured into water. The formed solid was collected by filtration, and dried in vacuo to give 1.5 g of the product as a brown powder. MS obsd. (ESI+) [(M+H)+] 354, 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ ppm 7.90-7.84 (m, 2 H), 7.66-7.62 (m, 2 H), 7.48 (t, J=7.2 Hz, 1 H), 7.32 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 1 H), 7.23 (dd, J=1.6, 8.8 Hz, 1 H), 6.29 (s, 2 H), 6.23 (s, 1 H), 4.97 (s, 2 H), 4.36 (brs, 2 H), 3.60 (t, J=4.8 Hz, 2 H), 2.34 (s, 3 H).
