The mixture of 2-chloro-6-{[1-(1,3,4,5-tetrahydro-2H-2-benzazepin-2-yl)ethylidene]amino}benzonitrile (6 g, 18.5 mmol), zinc chloride (2.52 g, 18.5 mmol) and N,N-dimethyl-acetamide (18 mL) was heated with stirring at 160° C. for 3 hours under argon. After the reaction was allowed to cool to about 40° C., sodium hydroxide (2 N, 20 mL) was added and then stirred for 10 minutes at room temperature. The reaction mixture was poured into water and the solid was collected by filtration, washed with water and dried in vacuo to give 5 g of product as an off-white powder (yield was 83.3%). MS obsd. (ESI+) [(M+H)+] 324.
