To a solution of methyl 4-cyclobutyl-2-methyl-5-(3-oxopentanoyl)benzoate (compound 445.1, 300 mg, 0.990 mmol, 1.00 equiv) in methanol (15 mL) was added NH2NH2.H2O. The resulting solution was stiffed for 1.5 h at 80° C. in an oil bath, and then concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was diluted with 100 mL of ethyl acetate, then washed with 3×100 mL of brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified using silica gel column chromatography with ethyl acetate/petroleum ether (1:5) as eluent to yield 188 mg (64%) of the title compound as a yellow oil.
