10 g (0.039 mole) of 2-chloromethylanthraquinone [prepared according to G. Izoret, Ann. Chim., 7, 180 (1962)] are dissolved in 50 ml of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), and 2.53 g (0.039 mole) of sodium azide are added, with stirring. After 1 hour, the temperature is increased to 50° C. and the mixture is stirred at this temperature for 10 hours. 250 ml of water are added and the precipitate is filtered off. 9.5 g (92.3% of theory) of 2-azidomethyl-anthraquinone are obtained; melting point: 130° C. (decomposition).
