Procedure
A mixture containing 9.56 g of 5-bromo-7-methyl-1,6-naphthyridin-2(1H)-one, 8.2 g of 4-methyl-1H-imidazole and 22 ml of N-methylpyrrolidin-one was heated with stirring in an oil bath at 140° C. for 20 hours. The reaction mixture containing some separated solid was diluted with about 150 ml of water and the solid was collected, triturated with water, washed with ethanol and dried to give 6.0 g of 7-methyl-5-(4-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)-1,6-naphthyridin-2(1H)-one, m.p. 307°-308° C.
