Reaction Steps
2.56 g (0.01 mol) of 2-formyl-4-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-6-methylsulfonylphenol are introduced into a solution of 1.58 g (0.01 mol) of potassium permanganate in 50 ml of 2N sodium hydroxide solution, and the mixture is heated on a steam bath for 30 minutes. The cooled solution is then adjusted to pH 2 with 2N hydrochloric acid and decolorized with concentrated Na2SO3 solution. The mixture is extracted three times with ethyl acetate, which is evaporated in vacuo and the residue is recrystallized from acetonitrile.
