A mixture of methyl 5-chloro-1,2,4-thiadiazole-3-carboxylate (7.80 g), thiourea (3.32 g), tetrahydrofuran (24 ml) and water (8 ml) was gently boiled for 6.5 hours. The reaction mixture was post-treated according to conventional manner to give yellow powder of methyl 5-mercapto-1,2,4-thiadiazole-3-carboxylate (7.1 g), mp. 126° to 127° C.
