Procedure

4-(2-Propylguanidino)-2-methylsulphinylpyrimidine (200 mg.) was added to a solution of sodium hydride (72 mg.) in 1,3-propanediol (2 ml.) and the mixture stirred at ambient temperature for 1 hour. The mixture was diluted with water and extracted with EtOAc (3×10 ml.). The extract was dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to give a gum which crystallised on standing. Recrystallisation from EtOAc gave 4-(2-propylguanidino)-2-(3-hydroxypropoxy)pyrimidine, m.p. 183°-184° (yield 25%).
