Procedure
To a solution of ethyl 2-(4-phenylpiperidin-1-yl)octahydropentalene-3a-carboxylate (1.85 g, 5.42 mmol) in THF (35 mL) was added a solution of sodium hydroxide (2.16 g, 54.2 mmol) in water (35 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for about 18 h. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the crude product was extracted into DCM (3×20 mL). The combined organic phases were washed with water (3×50 mL) and dried over MgSO4. Concentration in vacuo gave 2-(4-phenyl-piperidin-1-yl)-hexahydro-pentalene-3a-carboxylic acid (1.70 g) that was used in the next step without further purification.
