Procedure

A mixture of 3-bromo-6-methoxyphenanthrene-9,10-dione from Step 3 above and excess BBr3 in CH2Cl2 was stirred at room temperature to afford 3-bromo-6-hydroxyphenanthrene-9,10-dione which was used directly in the next step (Step 5 below).
