Under argon and at 0° C., a solution of hydrogen chloride in diethyl ether (2 M, 25 ml) is added to tert-butyl 4-{4-[2-(naphthalen-1-yl)ethyl]-1,3-thiazol-2-yl}piperidine-1-carboxylate (IV-2, 1.40 g). The mixture is stirred at 0° C. and then slowly warmed to room temperature. The mixture is stirred overnight, and the excess acid and solvent are then removed under reduced pressure. This gives 4-{4-[2-(naphthalen-1-yl)ethyl]-1,3-thiazol-2-yl}piperidine hydrochloride (1.28 g).
