A mixture of methyl {3-[(4-methylphenyl)sulfonyl]-7-nitro-2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzimidazol-1-yl}acetate from Step C (1.00 g, 2.47 mmol) and 10% Pd/C (100 mg) was stirred vigorously in EtOAc (100 mL) under an atmosphere of hydrogen (ca. 1 atm). After 4 h, the mixture was filtered through a pad of Celite, washing with EtOAc (300 mL). To the filtrate was added AcOH (2 mL) and this solution was heated at 80° C. for 1 h, then concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound. MS: m/z=344 (M+1).
