Procedure

p-Toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (2.17 g, 11.4 mmol) was added to a benzene solution (20 mL) of tert-butyl(±) [(1S,5R,6S)-6-(aminomethyl)-2-ethylbicyclo[3.2.0]hept-3-en-6-yl]acetate (2.75 g, 10.4 mmol), and the mixture was refluxed for 1 hour. The mixture was allowed to cool, and the deposited solid was then washed with methylene chloride to obtain the compound of interest as a gray solid (3.17 g, 80%, Major/Minor=3/1).
