Under the conditions of example 1 C, a solution of 11 g of 3-(3-methoxy-6-methoxycarbonyl-2-pyridyl)-(2E)-2-propenoic acid methyl ester in 600 ml of methanol is hydrogenated in the presence of 2.2 g of 10% palladium catalyst on activated carbon, worked up, and the crude product is chromatographed on silica gel with hexane/0-25% ethyl acetate. 8 g of 3-(3-methoxy-6-methoxycarbonyl-2-pyridyl)-propionic acid methyl ester of melting point 98°-100° C. is obtained.
