Procedure

(2-Pyridin-2-yl-ethyl)-{3-[2-(tetrahydro-pyran-2-yloxy)-ethyl]-benzyl}-carbamic acid tert-butyl ester (8 g) in tetrahydrofuran (100 mL) was treated with acetic acid (10 mL) and water (10 mL). The reaction was refluxed for 8 hour. Another 10 mL acetic and 10 mL water were added and the reaction heated at reflux for a further 2 hours. The reaction was cooled and the volatiles removed under vacuum. The reaction mixture was partitioned between aqueous sodium bicarbonate and ethyl acetate. The organic layers were dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo. The yellow residue was passed through a plug of silica, eluting with ether then ethyl acetate to elute the desired product (4.1 g).
