A solution of 5.83 g of (3aRS,7aRS)-7,7-dimethyl-2-vinyloxycarbonyl-2,3,3a,4,7,7a-hexahydro-1H-4-isoindolone in 80 cm3 of hydrochloric acid-saturated dioxane is stirred at room temperature for 1 hour and then concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure (2.5 kPa). The residue is dissolved in 150 cm3 of ethanol and the solution is brought to reflux for 1 hour 30 minutes and is then concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure (2.5 kPa). 5.2 g of (3aRS,7aRS)7,7-dimethyl-2,3,3a,4,7,7a-hexahydro-1H-4-isoindolone hydrochloride are obtained in the form of a brown foam.
