A stirred mixture of 2-chloroacetyl-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenz[b,f]azepine (6.6 g, 24.3 mmol), 4-(6-fluoro-1,2-benzisoxazol-3-yl)piperidine (5 g, 22.7 mmol) and K2CO3 (3.5 g, 40 mmol) in acetonitrile (300 ml) was heated at reflux for 4 hours. The insolubles were filtered, and the solvent was removed on a rotary evaporator. The crude product was purified by flash chromatography over a silica gel column (100 g of SiO2 ; eluted with dichloromethane (DCM) and 1-2% CH3OH in DCM). The product thus obtained weighed 8.7 g as a yellow oil. A sample (1.5 g) of this material was dissolved in ethanol and was treated with a solution of fumaric acid in ethanol (360 mg/3 ml). The solids collected were recrystallized from acetonitrile to yield 890 mg of white crystals, m.p. 182°-183° C.
