To 3.00 g of N-[2-(3,5-dichloropyridin-2-yl)-2-(ethoxyimino)ethyl]phthalimide in 30 ml of ethanol, 793 mg of hydrazine monohydrate was added, and the mixture was stirred at 70° C. for 3 hours. After completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature, mixed with 100 ml of water and extracted with ethyl acetate (100 ml×2). The resulting organic layers were combined, washed with water (100 ml×1) and dried over saturated aqueous sodium chloride and then anhydrous sodium sulfate, and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure to obtain 1.62 g of the desired crude product as a brown oil. The oil was used in the next step without further purification.
