Procedure

A solution of ethyl 5-amino-1-cyclopropyl-6,7-difluoro-1,4-dihydro-8-isopropoxy-4-oxoquinoline-3-carboxylate (125 mg, 0.341 mmol) and 1M aq. NaOH (0.5 mL) in EtOH (1.5 mL) was stirred at 50° C. for 1 h. After 2M HCl was added to the reaction mixture to pH<3, the crude product was extracted with EtOAc, washed with brine, dried over MgSO4 and the solvent was removed in vacuo. The residue was dried in vacuo to yield 5-amino-1-cyclopropyl-6,7-difluoro-1,4-dihydro-8-isopropoxy-4-oxoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid (113 mg, 98%) as a yellow solid.
