A mixture of 2-amino-5-bromo-3-chlorobenzaldehyde (9.0 g, 38.6 mmol) and urea (34.7 g, 579 mmol) was heated to 180° C. and stirred for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, and the resulting precipitate was diluted with water (1 L) and stirred for 2 hours. The resulting precipitate was filtered, and the moisture trapped was completely removed by the co-evaporation with toluene three times. The title compound (9.0 g, 90%) was obtained as a yellow solid. MS (ES+) C8H4BrClN2O requires: 257, 259, found: 258, 260 [M+H]+.
