A mixture of 2-amino-5-bromonicotinaldehyde (2.0 g, 10.0 mmol) and urea (9.0 g, 150.0 mmol) was heated at 180° C. and stirred vigorously for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, and the resulting precipitate was collected, washed with water (3×100 mL) and co-evaporated with toluene three times to completely remove the moisture trapped. The title compound (2.1 g, 93%) was obtained as a yellow solid. MS (ES+) C8H5BrN2O requires: 225, 227, found: 226, 228 [M+H]+.
