1.7 g (5 mmol) of 2-(5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-2-naphthyl)-2-nonenoic acid, 20 ml of toluene and 73 μl of DMF were introduced into a round-bottomed flask. The mixture was heated to 50° C. and 714 μl (6 mmol) of thionyl chloride were added and the mixture was stirred at this temperature for one hour. The mixture was evaporated to dryness and the crude acid chloride was employed as is in the synthesis to follow.
