Procedure
Under argon atmosphere, a solution of methyl 6-bromo-2-methylquinoline-3-carboxylate (1.22 g), 4-methylphenyl borate (0.65 g) and potassium carbonate (1.18 g) in toluene-ethanol-water (40-4-4 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. To the reaction mixture was added tetrakis-triphenylphosphinepalladium (0.15 g), and the mixture was refluxed for 18 hours and cooled to room temperature. The organic layer was washed with saturated sodium chloride solution, dried with magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was separated and purified with column chromatography (ethyl acetate/hexane=1:1) to give methyl 6-(4-methylphenyl)-2-methylquinoline-3-carboxylate (1.27 g) as colorless crystals.
