1,3-Di-cyclopropylmethyl-8-nitro xanthine (6 g, 0.023 mol) was dissolved in dimethylformamide (20 ml) and reacted with phosporous oxychloride (14 g) for 1 hour at 120° C. The mixture was then treated with water and stirred for 1 hour at room temperature. The precipitate was filtered off, dissolved in ethyl acetate, dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate and the solvent was removed in vacuo, yield 2.5 g (40%), m.pt. 220° C.
