Procedure

Optically active p-benzyloxybenzoic acid p-(1-methylheptyloxy)phenyl ester (69.0 g, 0.16 mol) prepared above in (iv) was dissolved in a mixed solvent (2:1) (1,000 ml) of ethyl acetate-ethanol, followed by reducing it in the presence of 5% PdC (5.0 g) to obtain optically active p-hydroxybenzoic acid p-(1-methyl-heptyloxy)phenyl ester (49.8 g).
