Procedure
To a stirred solution of 10 g of 1-[5-methyl-2-(3-pyridinyl)-1H-imidazol-4-yl]ethanone in 60 ml of 48% hydrobromic acid at 80° C. was added, dropwise during 5-10 minutes, 2.8 ml of bromine. After addition was complete, the mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 10 minutes, then allowed to cool to room temperature. The resulting solid was collected, washed with three 25 ml portions of acetone and dried, giving 13.4 g of 2-bromo-1-[5-methyl-2-(3-pyridinyl)-1H-imidazol-4-yl]ethanone, dihydrobromide.
