Procedure
20 ml of water and 10 ml of 2N sodium hydroxide solution were added to a solution of 1.96 g (5.43 mmol) of methyl [5-chloro-3-(2-ethoxypyridin-3-yl)-2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indol-3-yl]acetate in 10 ml of ethanol. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 18 hours. The mixture was worked up by adjusting to pH 5 with 1N hydrochloric acid and then concentrating in a rotary evaporator. The residue was taken up in toluene and again evaporated to dryness, and the residue was dried in a vacuum drying oven. 3.75 g of crude product were obtained and were employed without further purification in the next stage.
