Sodium hydroxide (4.35 mL, 8.69 mmol) was added to a stirred suspension of methyl 8-bromo-2-morpholino-4-oxo-4H-chromene-6-carboxylate (1.6 g, 4.35 mmol) dissolved in MeOH (30 mL). The resulting suspension was stirred at 23° C. for 16 hrs. The mixture was diluted with water and the pH adjusted to 3 with HCl 2N. The precipitate was collected by filtration, washed with water and dried over phosphorus pentoxide overnight to give 8-bromo-2-morpholino-4-oxo-4H-chromene-6-carboxylic acid (1.30 g, 84%) as a beige solid.
