Compound 32a (HCl salt, 5.0 g, 19.5 mmol) and Et3N (5.5 ml, 39.1 mmol) was stirred at 0° C. in CH2Cl2 (65 ml) for 15 min. Chloroacetyl chloride (1.9 ml, 23.5 mmol) was added dropwise and the resulting solution was stirred at room temperature for 20 min, at which time the reaction mixture was poured into a 1M solution of NaOH (50 ml) and the product was extracted with dichloromethane, dried (Na2SO4), filtered, and concentrated. The crude material was purified by column chromatography (Hex:EtOAc, 3:1) to give 5.5 g (95%) of 33a. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) 0.90-0.98 (m, 3H), 1.64-1.72 (m, 2H), 3.19-3.27 (m, 2H), 4.00 (s, 3H), 6.61-6.62 (dd, 1H, J=1.6 Hz), 6.64-6.77 (m, 1H), 6.96-6.99 (d, 1H, J=8.8 Hz).
