To a suspension of LiAlH4 (1.6 g, 40.5 mmol) in THF (100 ml) in an ice bath was added 37a (3.8 g, 11.0 mmol) dissolved in a solution of THF (25 ml). After addition, the mixture was refluxed for 3 hrs and cooled to 0° C. 10% NaOH was added dropwise, and the mixture stirred for 20 min, and filtered. The solution was dried (Na2SO4), filtered, and concentrated to give 38a (3.21 g, 97%), which was used without further purification. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) 0.91-0.96 (t, 3H, J=7.6 Hz), 1.40-1.59 (m, 3H), 1.97-2.22 (m, 1H), 2.41-3.11 (m, 19H), 3.82 (s, 3H), 5.2 (bs, 1H), 6.61-6.62 (dd, 1H, J=1.6 Hz), 6.66-6.79 (m, 1H), 6.96-6.99 (d, 1H, J=8.8 Hz).
