Combined methyl 2-(4-cyano-3-fluoro-2-methylphenyl)acetate (10.0 g, 48.3 mmol), 1,1-dimethoxy-N,N-dimethylmethanamine (17.25 g, 145 mmol), and solid lithium chloride (0.205 g, 4.83 mmol) and heated to 105° C. for 1.5 h. The mixture was cooled to 10° C. and water (210 mL) was added slowly. The solid was collected by vacuum filtration, dissolved in DCM and was purified by column chromatography to afford the title compound (7.95 g, 63%) as a pale yellow solid. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ ppm 2.07 (d, J=2.53 Hz, 3 H) 2.54-2.86 (m, 6 H) 3.50 (s, 3 H) 7.10 (d, J=7.83 Hz, 1 H) 7.62 (s, 1 H) 7.63-7.66 (m, 1 H). ESI-MS m/z [M+H]+ 263.2.
