(7-Formyl-6-methoxy-1H-benzoimidazol-2-ylsulfanyl)-acetic acid ethyl ester (1.432 g, 4.87 mmol) was dissolved in a mixture of 19.5 mL of 1N sodium hydroxide and 15 mL of dioxane. The solution was stirred at 50° C. for 2 h, cooled to 0° C., and the pH was adjusted to 3.5 by dropwise addition of 6N HCl, keeping the temperature at 0° C. The precipitated yellow solid was filtered, washed with ice cold water and dried. The title compound (1.10 g. 4.15 mmol, 85%) was isolated as a yellow powder.
