Procedure
3 g of 1-methylpiperazine are added dropwise to a suspension of 2.53 g of 1-methylamino-7-chloro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-1,8-naphthyridine-3-carboxylic acid in 30 ml of ethanol, with stirring, the acid dissolving in a slightly exothermic reaction. The mixture is heated at the boiling point for 1 hour, the ethanol is distilled off and the reaction product is dissolved in 1N sodium hydroxide solution. The filtered solution is brought to pH 6 with 10% strength hydrochloric acid. The precipitate is filtered off in the cold, washed with a little cold water and ethanol and dried in vacuo at 80° C. 3.1 g of 1-methylamino-7-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-1,8-naphthyridine-3-carboxylic acid hydrochloride of decomposition point 328° C. are obtained.
