10 g of 4-[2-(benzyloxycarbonyl)-ethyl]-1-[(ethoxycarbonyl)-methyl]-piperidine are hydrogenated in 150 ml of tetrahydrofuran at room temperature under a hydrogen pressure of 50 psi in the presence of 1.3 g of palladium-on-active charcoal for 4 hours. The solvent is evaporated off under reduced pressure and the residue is crystallized with diethyl ether and a little acetone.
