3-(2-Methylimidazol-1-yl)aniline (11 g, 63.6 mmol) is added in portions to acetic anhydride (100 ml) at ambient temperature. After stirring for 1 hour the mixture is poured into water (300 ml). The resulting solution is cooled in an ice-bath and rendered alkaline with aqueous sodium hydroxide (12M). The product is filtered off, washed thoroughly with water and dried to yield 2j (12.3 g, 97%). Mp 238-240° C.
