##STR197## (2R)-2-((2-(tert-butoxycarbonylamino)ethyl)amino)-3-(2-naphthyl)propionic acid methylester (3.4 g, 9.1 mmol) was stirred for 1 h in a mixture of TFA (5 ml) and methylene chloride(5 ml). The volatiles were removed in vacuo and the residue was dissolved in a mixture of water (40 ml) and methanol (100 ml). Sodium hydrogencarbonate (2.3 g) was added and the mixture was stirred overnight. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue was dissolved in water (40 ml) and extracted with ethyl acetate (10×50 ml). The combined organic phases were dried (magnesium sulphate) and the solvent was removed in vacuo to afford 1.96 g of (3R)-3-((2-naphthyl)methyl)piperazin-2-one.
