A methanol solution (25 mL) of ester 6-3 (400 mg, 1.28 mmol) and 1 N NaOH (5 mL, 5 mmol) was stirred under ambient conditions for 18 hr. The reaction solution was concentrated to dryness and the residue was neutralized with 1 M NaHSO4 solution to provide 6-4 as a pale yellow solid.
