Procedure

A solution of the compounds prepared as described in Example 2 (20.71 g) in ethyl acetate (200 mL) was treated with a solution of oxalic acid (15.46 g) in ethanol (50 mL). The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature. After one hour, the reaction mixture was treated with additional ethanol (50 mL). After 18 hours, the mixture was filtered, and the filtrate was evaporated to dryness in vacuo. The residue was treated with 1 N sodium hydroxide, and the resulting mixture extracted with diethyl ether. The combined ether extracts were washed with brine, dried over potassium carbonate, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by silica-gel chromatography, eluting with methylene chloride:5% ammonium hydroxide/methanol (97:3), to give 15.41 g of the title compound.
