To 9-nitro-1,2,3,5,6,10b-hexahydropyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinoline hydrochloride (Example 31(b), 2.0 g) in methanol (100 ml) was added concentrated hydrochloric acid (0.67 ml) and 5% palladium on carbon (200 mg). The mixture was hydrogenated at 50 psi on a Parr Hydrogenator. Hydrogen uptake was complete in 1.0 h. The catalyst was filtered off and the solvent removed under reduced pressure. The residue was dissolved in water, the solution basified with 2.5M sodium hydroxide and the product extracted into dichloromethane. The extracts were dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and the solvent removed under reduced pressure to yield the title compound as a thick oil (1.55 g).
