To a solution of Ethyl 4-(3-(2,6-dimethylbenzyloxy)phenyl)-4-oxobutyrate (Step C, 12.31 g, 36.2 mmol) in abs ethanol (160 ml) was added 1N NaOH (50 ml) at room temperature. The reaction mixture was stirred for 3 hours and then acidified with 1M HCl. The occuring white precipitate was filtered, washed with water and dried under vacuum to provide the title compound as a white solid.
