Procedure

To a stirred solution of sodium ethoxide (0.9 g, 13 mmol) in ethanol (10 mL) was added all at once 10 (1.07g, 4.4 mmol). The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 48 hours, then poured into water (100 mL). The resulting mixture was extracted with ether (3×50 mL). The ether extracts were combined, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated. The resulting amber oil was chromatographed (silica gel, hexane-acetone, 4:1) to give 11 as a yellow oil (0.6 g).
