To a solution of 0.907 g (2.95 mmol) of ethyl 4-(2-(tert-butoxycarbonyl(methyl)amino)ethyl)benzoate in 10 mL of DCM at 0° C. was added 2.0 mL (26 mmol) of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). The reaction was warmed to 22° C., stirred for 3 h and the solvents were then evaporated. The residue was partitioned between 100 mL of ethyl acetate and 100 mL of 1 N NaOH which had been saturated with NaCl. The aqueous layer was back-extracted with ethyl acetate (6×50 mL) and the combined organics were dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated to give 2c as a colorless oil.
