To a solution of 5-bromooxindole (100 mg, 0.572 mmol) in dioxane/H2O (3 ml/1 ml) was added Pd(PPh3)4 (55 mg, 0.047 mmol), 5-phenylthiophene-2-boronic acid (106 mg, 0.519 mmol) and potassium carbonate (196 mg, 1.42 mmol). The mixture was stirred at 120° C. for 1 hour under microwave irradiation. The residue was extracted with CHCl3, and the organic layer was washed with H2O and brine, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by column chromatography (CHCl3/MeOH) to give 5-(5-phenylthiophen-2-yl)indolin-2-one (44 mg) as a pale yellow solid.
