Procedure
To a stirred solution of 2-(2′,5′,6-trichloro-4-methoxybiphenyl-3-yl)acetaldehyde (300 mg, 0.92 mmol) in DCM (20 mL) at room temperature, tert-butyl piperazine-1-carboxylate (205 mg, 1.1 mmol) was added followed by drops of AcOH. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 h, and then NaBH(OAc)3 (1.95 g, 9.2 mmol) was added. The resulting mixture was stirred at reflux for 16 h. The mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature, diluted with water and extracted with DCM. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel (1-33% ethyl acetate/petroleum ether) to afford the desired product (350 mg, 77% yield) as a white solid.
